, by Thierry Bourgarel, 5 min reading time

This article explores the Allier department (03), the green heart of France. It is a paradise for "slow tourism," featuring mostly rolling hills through preserved bocage, vast royal oak forests, and alluvial plains along the Allier and Loire rivers. The suggested route, a 200 km loop, connects Moulins (city of art) to Montluçon (medieval town), passing through Souvigny (spiritual Cluniac cradle) and the exceptional Tronçais Forest, one of the most beautiful in Europe. The journey ideally ends in Vichy, the elegant spa town, linked to the Via Allier bike route. Calm, safety, and reconnection with wild yet accessible nature define this unmissable stop.

Chronicles of a Tour de France by Bike: Episode 03 – Allier, the Green Heart and Secret of France

After the troubled history of the Aisne, our great challenge to cross France by bike takes us to department 03: Allier.

Located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, at the geographical center of mainland France, Allier is a land of transition, where the langue d’oïl meets the langue d’oc. It is a discreet, unfairly overlooked department that offers the cycle tourist a full immersion in an authentic, gentle, and preserved rural France. It is the paradise of "slow tourism."

Prepare your picnic and open your eyes, we are diving into the "Green Heart" of France.

Allier by Bike: What to Expect?

Allier is not the Auvergne of steep volcanoes, but it shares its greenery and tranquility. Here, nature is in charge.

The Profile: Expect mostly rolling terrain. It’s never flat, but the climbs are gentle and gradual, perfect for touring cycling. The landscapes vary between the Bourbonnais bocage (small fields enclosed by hedges), majestic oak forests (like Tronçais), and alluvial plains along the rivers.

The Atmosphere: Safety, calm, and serenity. Allier has an excellent network of very quiet secondary roads. The department has invested heavily in cycling infrastructure, especially the Greenways along the Allier and Loire rivers. It’s the ideal place to disconnect and recharge.

Our Suggested Route: The Bourbonnais Loop (approx. 200 km)

To capture the essence of this secret department, we suggest a 3 to 4-day itinerary forming a loop around the main historic towns and the Allier river.

Day 1: Moulins and the Bourbonnais Bocage (approx. 50 km)

Start: Moulins. The prefecture is a city of art and history. Take time to visit the National Center for Stage Costume (CNCS), a unique place in the world, and admire the triptych by the Master of Moulins in the cathedral.

The Route: Leave Moulins by crossing the Allier. You immediately enter the Bourbonnais bocage. The road gently winds through hedges and pastures where Charolais cows graze, symbols of the department.

The Stopover: Souvigny. It is the spiritual heart of Bourbonnais. Its majestic priory church, dependent on Cluny, is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. Stay overnight in this medieval village for a timeless atmosphere.

Day 2: Through the Tronçais Forest (approx. 70 km)

The Route: This is the green day. You leave the bocage to enter the Tronçais Forest, one of the most beautiful oak groves in Europe. The road is straight, going under leafy vaults. The air is fresh, the silence broken only by birdsong. Stop at one of the many ponds (like Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais) for a refreshing break. It’s a pure woodland immersion experience.

The Stopover: Saint-Amand-Montrond (officially in Cher, but on the edge, a practical gateway).

Day 3: From Tronçais to Montluçon (approx. 50 km)

The Route: You leave the forest and the terrain rises slightly approaching Montluçon. You cross an area more marked by medieval industry and coal, with wilder landscapes. Entry into Montluçon is through the Cher valley.

The Stopover: Montluçon. Change of atmosphere. It’s the medieval and industrial town. The Dukes of Bourbon’s castle dominates the old town and its cobbled streets. Don’t miss the MuPop (Museum of Popular Music).

Day 4 (optional or extension): Towards Vichy and the Greenway (approx. 30 km or more)

The Route: To finish gently, head northeast to reach the Allier valley at Vichy. The spa town, a UNESCO World Heritage candidate, is elegant with its parks and Art Deco architecture. From there, you can take the Via Allier, a developed bike route following the river, perfect for returning to Moulins or continuing your journey.

Must-Sees in Allier by Bike

  1. Moulins: Its historic center, CNCS, and famous triptych.

  2. Souvigny: The spiritual cradle of the Bourbons and its Romanesque priory.

  3. Tronçais Forest: The most beautiful oak grove in France, for a unique woodland immersion.

  4. Montluçon: Its ducal castle and medieval center.

  5. Vichy: The elegance of the Queen of Spa Towns and its parks along the Allier.

  6. The Bourbonnais Bocage: The authenticity of the landscapes and the calm of the secondary roads.

Practical Tips for Allier

  • When to Go? From May to October. Summer can be hot, but the many rivers and the Tronçais forest offer shade. Autumn is beautiful with the forest colors.

  • What Bike? A gravel bike, touring bike, or even a comfortable road bike is perfect. The roads are paved and of good quality. The Greenways along the rivers are flat and accessible.

  • Accommodation: Allier is a discreet welcoming land. Look for municipal campsites, charming guesthouses, and family hotels. The "Accueil Vélo" label is well developed along major routes like the Via Allier.

  • Supplies: Villages are small. Always plan to carry water and snacks. But don’t miss tasting local specialties: Potato pâté, Charolais beef, Saint-Pourçain wines (a discreet AOC to discover).

Final Word

Cycling in Allier is like rediscovering France. It’s not a department of spectacle, but one of nuances. It’s the softness of the landscapes, the calm of the roads, the discretion of the Bourbons, and the majesty of nature that leave a mark.

It’s the ideal stop for the cycle tourist seeking authenticity, silence, and reconnection with the elements, in the "Green Heart" of our country.
